SUMMARY:Great Reno Balloon Race
DESCRIPTION:The Great Reno Balloon Race is the world’s largest free hot-air ballooning event. During four days in early September\, you can look up into the Reno skies and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring about. From its humble beginnings in 1982 with just 20 balloons\, The Great Reno Balloon Race has taken flight with up to 100 balloons each year. The idea was to create an event that would keep visitors in town the weekend between the State Fair and the Reno Air Races and 41 years later\, it is known as a world-renowned\, and locally\, a beloved community tradition. \nTaking place just a few miles north of downtown Reno at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park\, the event enchants both young and old with its vibrant colors and inspiring music. The Great Reno Balloon Race has won many awards over the years\, including ‘Best Special Event in Reno’ and ‘Best Special Event in Northern Nevada.’ With an average of 150\,000+ spectators attending the event each year\, the number of lives touched by the beautiful spectacle continues to rise just like the balloons themselves.

SUMMARY:International Camel and Ostrich Races
DESCRIPTION:The camels\, ostriches\, zebras and good old-fashioned family fun returns with the 64th International Camel & Ostrich Races\, Sept. 8-10\, right here in historic Virginia City. This hilarious and family-favorite tradition started as a prank between two newspaper editors more than 60 years ago and remains as silly and fun as its origin. \nThe International Camel & Ostrich Races bring the laughs for the whole family as jockeys\, both professional and amateur\, race their camels\, ostriches and zebras around the horseshoe track to the roars of the crowd. You never know what might happen! It’s a comical racing spectacle guaranteed to leave the entire family laughing. You can even catch a ride on a camel – a photo op not to be missed. \nWith four shows to choose from\, there’s no reason to miss this uproarious event. Friday night\, Sept. 8\, enjoy Hot Camel Nights\, an evening show with discounted rates for locals. Saturday\, Sept. 9 catch the 10 a.m. or the 2 p.m. show and the up-close and personal Camel Hump to C Street. Then Sunday\, Sept. 10 is Family Day with a show at noon and the first 100 kids ride a camel for free. Gates open an hour in advance of each show start. \nMake a weekend of it! Plan ahead and book a room. View our lodging options here.
