SUMMARY:Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Great Basin Desert: Reno Area
DESCRIPTION:Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Great Basin Desert: Seasonal Herb Walk (Reno/Tahoe Area)\nStretching from the Eastern Sierra escarpment of California and reaching all the way to the west slope of Utah’s Rocky Mountains\, the Great Basin is the largest desert biome found entirely within the borders of the United States. Generally referred to as a “cold” desert\, it receives its meager annual allotment of precipitation (averaging around 9 inches) mostly as snow. To the untrained eye this gray\, expansive “sagebrush ocean” often appears bleak and lifeless…but upon closer more skillful examination nothing could be further from the truth! Early autumn (after the searing heat of summer has abated yet before any significant snowfall) happens to be the IDEAL time to explore this majestic landscape of shrub dominated valleys\, riparian canyons\, piñon/juniper foothills\, and high desert mountains. Join us as we discover together many of the amazing native/naturalized edible & medicinal plants that can be found growing throughout this uniquely diverse bioregion. Topics to be covered during class include: field botany/plant I.D\, plant family characteristics\, legal-ethical harvesting/processing/preparation methods\, edible/medicinal/utilitarian uses\, regional ethnobotany\, plant toxicology (plus tips on how to avoid poisonous look-alike species)\, natural history\, plant conservation and at-risk species\, sampling of a variety of wild edible & medicinal plant preparations\, and more! Our study will emphasize a dynamic sensory awareness of the plants via close observation\, touching\, tasting\, and smelling. This class should prove to be insightful and rewarding for anyone interested in knowing more about the flora of this often underappreciated part of the American West.

SUMMARY:The Great Reno Balloon Race
DESCRIPTION:The Great Reno Balloon Race is the world’s largest free hot-air ballooning event. During four days in early September\, you can look up into the Reno skies and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring about. From its humble beginnings in 1982 with just 20 balloons\, The Great Reno Balloon Race has taken flight with up to 100 balloons each year. The idea was to create an event that would keep visitors in town the weekend between the State Fair and the Reno Air Races and 39 years later\, it is known as a world-renowned\, and locally\, a beloved community tradition. \nTaking place just a few miles north of downtown Reno at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park\, the event enchants both young and old with its vibrant colors and inspiring music. The Great Reno Balloon Race has won many awards over the years\, including ‘Best Special Event in Reno’ and ‘Best Special Event in Northern Nevada.’ With an average of 120\,000 spectators attending the event each year\, the number of lives touched by the beautiful spectacle continues to rise just like the balloons themselves.

SUMMARY:Inaugural Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Summerfest 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Northern Nevada Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Memorial Committee presents its first annual Dr. Martin Luther Kings\, Jr.\, Summerfest. The Summerfest will include fun for the whole family\, community fellowship\, games\, music\, art\, and food trucks. \nThis event will be held at Pat Baker Park on Saturday\, July 24th\, from 1:00-4:00 pm. It is our goal that this event will inspire the community to take action in support of human and civil rights in their day-to-day interactions and work. \nThe Northern Nevada Dr. MLK\, Jr.\, Memorial Committee promotes collaborative and cooperative relations\, encourages the sharing of information among all organizations and faith groups. We work with our members and the community at large to support inclusion\, kindness\, charity\, love\, and respect among all religious groups and residents of Nevada. Our goal is to understand and honor all faiths\, cultures\, and beliefs. We create an environment of understanding through communication\, having an open mind and open heart\, and joining together to focus on what unites us while respecting how we differ. \nAs part of the festivities\, a new mural will be created at Pat Baker Park. Artist Terrence Hammond\, a local muralist and painter\, will lead the painting of the mural. Community members will have an opportunity to help lay the foundation for the mural during the event. The mural\, funded by the City of Reno’s 2% for Public Art fund\, will depict and honor local black women and men who have made a difference in our community. Hammond says\, “Given Pat Baker Park as the location\, the concept reflects an authentic street art style that children can understand as well as bringing an aesthetic that is unique and appreciated by all age groups. The characters are representations of Evelyn Mount\, Kenneth B. Dalton\, Dolores Feemster\, Bernice Matthews\, and Ondra L. Berry all of whom have made significant contributions to black culture and community in our city.”
