DESCRIPTION:The Lake Tahoe Dance Festival is a presentation of the Lake Tahoe Dance Collective\, whose mission is to promote classical\, modern and contemporary dance of the finest quality in the Lake Tahoe area through performance\, education and outreach\, enriching the community as a whole and as a cultural destination. \n​ \nThe festival was started to present the finest  professional dance and dance instruction in North Lake Tahoe. \n​ \nThe festival is directed by longtime friends and collaborators\, Constantine Baecher and Christin Hanna\, who’s friendship started in 1998 at American Ballet Theatre’s summer program in New York. \n​ \nThe festival offers three days of main stage performances\, audience participatory demonstrations\, site-specific installations\, meet-the-artists talks and more. The festival celebrates a variety of today’s most exciting working choreographers while preserving beloved classics of the past; including works by George Balanchine\, Lester Horton\, and Erick Hawkins.

Martha Graham Dance Company will perform iconic Graham classics alongside a stunning new work by one of today’s top choreographers. The dancers of the Department of Theatre & Dance\, School of the Arts at the University of Nevada\, Reno will open the program with a special restaging of Graham’s first modernist masterpiece\, ‘Heretic\,’ from 1929.Then\, the Company dancers take the stage with Graham’s joyous ode to love\, ‘Diversion of Angels\,’ which will be followed by one of her most powerful solos\, ‘Immediate Tragedy.’ Reno audiences will be among the first to see ‘Scavengers’ by the much-in-demand choreographer Andrea Miller. This season premiere brings us four intimate duets that evoke our renewed appreciation of human connection post pandemic. ‘Scavengers’ also showcases the world-renown athleticism of the Graham dancers.The full Company closes the program with ‘Acts of Light\,’ created by Graham in 1981 and performed in three sections. The first is a passionate duet titled ‘Conversation of Lovers’. The 38th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering will take place in Elko\, Nevada\, Jan. 24-29\, 2022! We will be “Keeping the West Wild\,” inviting western poets\, songwriters\, artists\, artisans\, and land stewards to bring new and old stories to light as they endeavor to create a West that hosts healthy and hospitable landscapes and agriculture-based communities. DESCRIPTION:The Northern Nevada Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Memorial Committee presents its first annual Dr. Martin Luther Kings\, Jr.\, Summerfest. The Summerfest will include fun for the whole family\, community fellowship\, games\, music\, art\, and food trucks. \nThis event will be held at Pat Baker Park on Saturday\, July 24th\, from 1:00-4:00 pm. It is our goal that this event will inspire the community to take action in support of human and civil rights in their day-to-day interactions and work. \nThe Northern Nevada Dr. MLK\, Jr.\, Memorial Committee promotes collaborative and cooperative relations\, encourages the sharing of information among all organizations and faith groups. We work with our members and the community at large to support inclusion\, kindness\, charity\, love\, and respect among all religious groups and residents of Nevada. Our goal is to understand and honor all faiths\, cultures\, and beliefs. We create an environment of understanding through communication\, having an open mind and open heart\, and joining together to focus on what unites us while respecting how we differ. \nAs part of the festivities\, a new mural will be created at Pat Baker Park. Artist Terrence Hammond\, a local muralist and painter\, will lead the painting of the mural. Community members will have an opportunity to help lay the foundation for the mural during the event. The mural\, funded by the City of Reno’s 2% for Public Art fund\, will depict and honor local black women and men who have made a difference in our community. Hammond says\, “Given Pat Baker Park as the location\, the concept reflects an authentic street art style that children can understand as well as bringing an aesthetic that is unique and appreciated by all age groups. The characters are representations of Evelyn Mount\, Kenneth B. Dalton\, Dolores Feemster\, Bernice Matthews\, and Ondra L. Berry all of whom have made significant contributions to black culture and community in our city.”
