SUMMARY:A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Phil Present The Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:The stage at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts will be alive with a sugar plum fairy and dancing mice as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the annual Nutcracker Ballet on December 9\, 10\, 11\, 2022.  Artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting rendition of the popular holiday ballet and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s moving score. Laura Jackson will be conducting the orchestra. Due to popular demand\, we will continue to have a fifth performance. \nPrincipal dancers who have performed with professional ballet companies such as Ballet West\, Kansas City Ballet and the Diablo Ballet will perform the leading roles along side a large cast of local talent. \nNutcracker performances will be held Friday December 9th at 8pm\, December 10th at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday December 11th at 1pm and 7pm at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Reno. Ticket prices are $30 to $65 with discounts for seniors and children. \nA special Sugar Plum party will be held after the Saturday and Sunday afternoon performances where children can meet the Nutcracker characters. \nA.V.A. Ballet Theatre is the resident ballet company of the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. SUMMARY:Classical Tahoe: Sibelius\, Séjourné\, & Rachmaninoff
DESCRIPTION:Sibelius’s Finlandia had its origins in political protest. It was written for the Finnish Press Pension Celebration of 1899\, a thinly veiled rally in support of freedom of the Finnish press\, then largely controlled by tsarist Russia. Sibelius later reworked parts of the music into a Finlandia Hymn which is today regarded as Finland’s unofficial national anthem.\nIt’s not often that a percussion instrument like the marimba is a featured soloist with an orchestra. Praised by the New York Times for his “understated but unmistakable virtuosity”\, Svet Stoyanov will play Séjourné’s Concerto for Marimba which combines the romantic and jazzy sounds of the instrument.\nRachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 is a favorite of many because of its continuous lush\, sweeping\, romantic melodies that will be sure to touch your soul.

DESCRIPTION:Formed amid LA’s burgeoning punk and new wave scene in the late ’70s\, the Go-Go’s got their start playing seminal venues like The Whiskey A Go Go and The Roxy. For their 1981 debut LP Beauty and the Beat\, the band eschewed their early punk sound in favor of a more radio-friendly brand of power pop — with phenomenal results. The album peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200\, spawning the hit singles “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat” and earning the girls the Best New Artist award at the 1982 Grammys. 1982 follow-up Vacation was a similar success\, landing two more hits on the charts and going on to be certified Gold by the RIAA. Following an initial breakup in 1985\, the band’s members embarked on various solo ventures\, reuniting periodically over the years to record and tour. Back on the road for another highly anticipated tour\, the Go-Go’s will bring their signature energy to venues around the country.

These tales of courage are often what audience members find the most touching and uplifting.

DESCRIPTION:Artown’s March 8\, 2022 presentation of the incomparable Martha Graham Dance Company: The First and The Future\, marks the triumphant return to the stage for the Company after a long 19 months\, and is part of their 96th season! Martha Graham Dance Company will perform iconic Graham classics alongside a stunning new work by one of today’s top choreographers. The dancers of the Department of Theatre & Dance\, School of the Arts at the University of Nevada\, Reno will open the program with a special restaging of Graham’s first modernist masterpiece\, ‘Heretic\,’ from 1929.Then\, the Company dancers take the stage with Graham’s joyous ode to love\, ‘Diversion of Angels\,’ which will be followed by one of her most powerful solos\, ‘Immediate Tragedy.’ Reno audiences will be among the first to see ‘Scavengers’ by the much-in-demand choreographer Andrea Miller. This season premiere brings us four intimate duets that evoke our renewed appreciation of human connection post pandemic. ‘Scavengers’ also showcases the world-renown athleticism of the Graham dancers.The full Company closes the program with ‘Acts of Light\,’ created by Graham in 1981 and performed in three sections.
