SUMMARY:Food Truck Friday in Reno
DESCRIPTION:The food truck movement in Reno-Tahoe is thriving! More than 80 roam the region. Each week in the summertime\, you’ll find 35 to 45 Reno food trucks at our area’s premier food truck event\, Food Truck Fridays Reno. It’s one of the top 10 largest food truck events in the nation\, according to the Travel Channel. Reno Food Truck Fridays is held 4 – 9 p.m. each Friday from early June to late August in beautiful Idlewild Park in Reno. Attendees select from a wide range of food choices\, from over-the-top tacos\, decadent Southern fare\, juicy sliders\, fiery chicken wings\, and fresh-made pasta to slow-roasted barbecue\, gourmet hot dogs\, Asian bites\, as well as colorful and thirst-quenching shaved ice and many other cooling desserts. Come hungry because you will surely leave full. Do you like a bit of charity with your meal? Stop by the BJ’s Barbecue truck where local culinary students from the Academy of Arts\, Careers and Technology and Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno serve you Kick Ass Fries (a huge mound of fresh fries topped with shredded pork and sauce) or Whoop Ass Fries (a giant container of fries topped with savory brisket and sauce). Net proceeds support college scholarships and other needs for local culinary students. Wash down all the tasty food with a local craft brew\, tall mixed drink\, glass of wine\, or tart and sweet lemonade. Besides the Reno food trucks\, this free\, family-friendly event features live music\, a large playground with train rides for the kids\, and more. It’s a party in the park surrounded by Reno food trucks so bring your lawn chairs and blankets to kick back in the grass shaded by mature trees with your family and friends. Relax and let the food truckers cook for you at Food Truck Friday Reno! \nhttps://www.facebook.com/RenoStreetFood

SUMMARY:The 11th Annual LCF Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Last year we cancelled the actual sale day due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This year we will have a sale day\, and we will follow all protocol for doing so in a safe and careful manner. The easiest way to do this will be to have a lot of preorders so that plants are already packed up and easy to hand over to you on the sale day. Thus\, we encourage people to preorder their plants\, which hopefully will be easy to do through the new online store! What? Yeah! Check it out! \nIt’s only a tab away up in the menu bar at the top of the screen. This page is still super useful\, however\, because the shop does not have any of the detailed information about the plants – you have to use the catalog to find all of that\, and then go to the store to submit your order. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Loping Coyote Farms plant nursery offers you access to a whole suite of plants that we use ourselves in our edible food forests and ecological farming systems in the Reno area. The species and cultivars that make the cut in the nursery are those that we have found to work best for us in the harsh climatic conditions of our Eastern Sierra/Great Basin area. We offer plant representatives from all the layers of a food forest\, from the roots and herbs up to the giant emergent canopy plants. We have attempted to offer plants representing all of the functions that an edible forest ecology entails\, from fruit and nut production to nitrogen fixation\, insectary and ground cover. Our hope is to help spread interest in perennial-plant-based systems by giving local people the plants they need to get these systems going in their own ground. We do also love our annual veggies and flowers\, so we offer some of those plants as well. \n\n\nOur 2021 Plant Catalog is officially UP. It’s an exciting well-rounded offering this year\, and the catalog is full of good information\, so please either download the catalog or read it here on the website\, and enjoy! You can place your plant orders using our brand new Online Store. If the online store isn’t to your liking\, just send us an email with your list of plants. There is none of the detailed plant information on the store\, so the plant catalog is still the place to go to get familiar with the offerings before purchasing on the store. If there’s a specific plant you want and you don’t see it in the catalog\, let us know. We may be able to get it for you. For a list of our all our previous offerings\, check out our LCF Master Plant List. \nAlso\, don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter so you can be sure to get a reminder about the plant sale\, or to know when each year’s new catalog is up. We still accept cash and checks through the online store\, as well as credit cards and PayPal. Please contact us with any questions or requests. Happy planting dreams!

SUMMARY:Straw Bale Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to garden using straw bales instead of traditional gardening methods! Fun and easy for the whole family.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nStraw Bale Gardening is simply a different type of container gardening. The main difference is that the container is the straw bale itself and is held together with two or three strings. Once the straw inside the bale begins to decay the straw becomes “conditioned” compost that creates an extraordinary plant rooting environment. Getting the straw bales conditioned is an essential part of the process\, and should be started two weeks prior to your target planting date wherever you are located. This gardening technique works well anywhere in the country or the world for that matter.

SUMMARY:Genoa Candy Dance & Faire
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. Click here to see the 2022 Genoa Candy Dance & Faire. \nFor generations\, locals and visitors alike have flocked to Nevada’s oldest permanent settlement\, for the Annual Candy Dance! The event originated with a humble and simple need…street lights. Yes\, street lights. In 1919\, the town needed to raise money to purchase and install the lights. Prominent Genoa resident Lillian Virgin Finnegan developed the idea to host a dance\, and pass out homemade candy\, as a fundraiser and the first Genoa Candy Dance was born. \nThe first Candy Dance was a success and the streetlights were purchased. However\, the maintenance costs and electricity bills raised another funding problem\, which was solved by making the Candy Dance an annual fundraiser. Almost 100 years later\, the Candy Dance has grown to more than 300 craft and food vendors. In fact\, they close the streets to vehicles during the two-day event. \nGenoa Candy Dance Fun Facts: \n\nOf the 10 original lights in town\, 9 still burn brightly.\nLillian Virgin Finnegan was an active supporter of women’s suffrage.\nToday the Genoa Candy Dance funds about ⅔ of the town’s annual budget.\nEvery year volunteers make about 4\,000 pounds of Genoa’s famous homemade candy.\nA craft fair was added to the event in the 1970s.\nThe event draws about 50\,000 visitors.\n\nThis annual event is always held the last full weekend of September. Make your travel plans soon to enjoy this historic event! \nStay up-to-date on Carson Valley events and activities by connecting with us on Facebook\, Twitter\, and Instagram. \nTake a self-guided tour around Genoa with this Candy Dance Street Light Map

DESCRIPTION:The Tahoe Adventure Challenge and Adventure Race is a celebration of the natural environment of the North Shore\, and the perfect climate of “Indian Summer.” September is a favorite month of Tahoe locals… and no wonder: daytime temperatures are in the 80’s with the evenings cooling into the 60’s\, the skies are deep blue with only an occasional afternoon thunderstorm rolling through (to help keep the dust down on the trails!). This is a perfect time for a visit to the Big Blue.\nThe Tahoe Adventure Challenge is a multi-sport event in which teams and individuals participate and compete in kayaking or stand up paddling\, mountain biking\, trail running\, and navigation. Designed such that participating teams will complete in an 8 hour maximum time format. Teams travel on land and lake to gather as many checkpoints as possible and finish within the 8 hour time limit.\nHowever\, don’t take the Tahoe Adventure Challenge lightly as the event starts out at 6200’ and heads up to 9000’ and will include challenging and steep terrain. No matter how long your adventure takes we promise to greet you with a smile as you cross the finish line and provide you with the great tastes of the Big Blue BBQ.

SUMMARY:Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Great Basin Desert: Reno Area
DESCRIPTION:Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Great Basin Desert: Seasonal Herb Walk (Reno/Tahoe Area)\nStretching from the Eastern Sierra escarpment of California and reaching all the way to the west slope of Utah’s Rocky Mountains\, the Great Basin is the largest desert biome found entirely within the borders of the United States. Generally referred to as a “cold” desert\, it receives its meager annual allotment of precipitation (averaging around 9 inches) mostly as snow. To the untrained eye this gray\, expansive “sagebrush ocean” often appears bleak and lifeless…but upon closer more skillful examination nothing could be further from the truth! Early autumn (after the searing heat of summer has abated yet before any significant snowfall) happens to be the IDEAL time to explore this majestic landscape of shrub dominated valleys\, riparian canyons\, piñon/juniper foothills\, and high desert mountains. Join us as we discover together many of the amazing native/naturalized edible & medicinal plants that can be found growing throughout this uniquely diverse bioregion. Topics to be covered during class include: field botany/plant I.D\, plant family characteristics\, legal-ethical harvesting/processing/preparation methods\, edible/medicinal/utilitarian uses\, regional ethnobotany\, plant toxicology (plus tips on how to avoid poisonous look-alike species)\, natural history\, plant conservation and at-risk species\, sampling of a variety of wild edible & medicinal plant preparations\, and more! Our study will emphasize a dynamic sensory awareness of the plants via close observation\, touching\, tasting\, and smelling. This class should prove to be insightful and rewarding for anyone interested in knowing more about the flora of this often underappreciated part of the American West.
