SUMMARY:Reno Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Mercury Momentum has adopted a 3-armed philosophy to embody Earth Day and guide the event: \nThe Natural World – to respect\, protect\, explore and engage in the Nature of the planet \nGreen Technologies – to explore and expand interest\, understanding and support for innovations that are cleaner\, healthier and more sustainable for the future \nMany Cultures – to respect and explore different perspectives on what Earth Day means\, including views on science\, policy\, culture\, spirit\, lifestyles\, and/or economics \nWe continually try to balance the event between these 3 arms and develop new programs to expand each direction. \nReno Earth Day also attempts to uphold a philosophy of inclusiveness in order to maximize the reach of Earth Day messages and changes in habits and assumptions over a broader audience. The role of the organizers is not to judge different perspectives\, but to optimize the forum for so many people – so many puzzle pieces – to come together\, learn from each other and share community cathexis and education. Inclusiveness is extended to how we reach other volunteers and organization\, how we design the layouts for different types of exhibitors and how we attempt to diversify the audience. We try not to judge what we think participants should do\, but try to maximize the opportunities for them to learn and choose a better way to act. We have over 100 non-profit groups participating with the freedom to advocate\, rally and maintain a myriad of “should” voices. Our process is to simply keep it fair and fun for so many perspectives involved\, support and assist the plans of participating organizations and help the puzzle pieces fit together smoothly. \nBy expanding how we include all participants\, we have expanded the audience and its diversity. The benefits of this approach are to have more educational impact\, creating even more positive change. An event like this could run the risk of attracting mainly like-minded individuals\, who already know of most environmental initiatives\, technologies and resources\, and already practice strong sustainable lifestyles. Therefore\, the change inspired by the event could remain minimal and be defined by others’ as simply a “special interest.” By attracting a wider\, more diverse audience that may not already know about these things\, the opportunity for change is greater; even a small change of practice or habit in a larger audience equates to greater overall impact. Our goal is to exemplify that stewardship of the planet we share is not a “special Interest;” it affects us all\, so we need to create greater momentum by involving more people. The event is then designed to maximize the educational opportunities at the event – both interactive and passive – so that once we get people there\, they cannot help but learn something. \nPuzzlemasters\nThere are a multitude of perspectives on what Earth Day means.  For some\, it is about sustainable technologies and science\, for some it is about connections with nature and conservation\, for some it is about social and/or political change\, in numerous philosophies it is about spiritual connections with the planet\, for others it is about healthy living and lifestyle\, and yet others about sustainable economic practices\, while others emphasize tolerance and a planet-wide neighborhood. For some people education in these areas is key\, for others it is policy change and activism\, and for others it is celebration and expression of these connections. We see our purpose with this event is ensuring there is a forum for all of those perspectives to come together without judging any. We are amazed with how tolerant and cooperative so many perspectives are on this day to come together and make this event happen. ALL of the educational programs\, booths\, activities and workshops are put on by one of the exhibitors.  We continue to create the structures to ensure a balance of education\, expression\, vending and fun\, but we are not usually providing the content.  We create programs that allow more people and organizations to participate\, and try to promote all participants’ messages through media\, games\, layout and access strategies.  Participants – exhibitors\, organizations\, individuals and sponsors – develop the content.  Our role is to make the event and messages as accessible as possible to more people and maintain the balances.  There are literally thousands of moving pieces\, and we are simply the puzzle masters making sure they function together(as well as we can) and as fairly as possible\, while the event itself is actually “put on by” all of the participants. All Volunteers and planners should add that to your resumes – Puzzlemasters!

SUMMARY:An Evening to RAVE About! A Night in the City
DESCRIPTION:Family-style dining\, silent and live auctions\, raffle\, entertainment\, beer and wine. To benefit the R.A.V.E. Family Center: \nProviding respite to families caring for children with special needs while training high school volunteers to work with these very special children. \nFamilies that have children with special needs have their own special need: the need for time. That means time for mom to enjoy a workout. Time for couples to enjoy a date night. Or for families to catch a movie\, go bowling\, play Scrabble or settle into a nice\, quiet storytelling session. Those are the kinds of pleasures and pastimes that go a long way toward giving you peace\, power and the ability to connect with yourself and others who are occasionally lost in the process of focusing on a child with special challenges. \nIn the meantime\, while you’re enjoying your own moment of reprieve\, your child with special needs is likely enjoying his or her own form of respite and discovery as well. \nCreating these healthy moments of escape is what RAVE is all about\, little “time outs” with tremendously positive outcomes.

SUMMARY:The 11th Annual LCF Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Last year we cancelled the actual sale day due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This year we will have a sale day\, and we will follow all protocol for doing so in a safe and careful manner. The easiest way to do this will be to have a lot of preorders so that plants are already packed up and easy to hand over to you on the sale day. Thus\, we encourage people to preorder their plants\, which hopefully will be easy to do through the new online store! What? Yeah! Check it out! \nIt’s only a tab away up in the menu bar at the top of the screen. This page is still super useful\, however\, because the shop does not have any of the detailed information about the plants – you have to use the catalog to find all of that\, and then go to the store to submit your order. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Loping Coyote Farms plant nursery offers you access to a whole suite of plants that we use ourselves in our edible food forests and ecological farming systems in the Reno area. The species and cultivars that make the cut in the nursery are those that we have found to work best for us in the harsh climatic conditions of our Eastern Sierra/Great Basin area. We offer plant representatives from all the layers of a food forest\, from the roots and herbs up to the giant emergent canopy plants. We have attempted to offer plants representing all of the functions that an edible forest ecology entails\, from fruit and nut production to nitrogen fixation\, insectary and ground cover. Our hope is to help spread interest in perennial-plant-based systems by giving local people the plants they need to get these systems going in their own ground. We do also love our annual veggies and flowers\, so we offer some of those plants as well. \n\n\nOur 2021 Plant Catalog is officially UP. It’s an exciting well-rounded offering this year\, and the catalog is full of good information\, so please either download the catalog or read it here on the website\, and enjoy! You can place your plant orders using our brand new Online Store. If the online store isn’t to your liking\, just send us an email with your list of plants. There is none of the detailed plant information on the store\, so the plant catalog is still the place to go to get familiar with the offerings before purchasing on the store. If there’s a specific plant you want and you don’t see it in the catalog\, let us know. We may be able to get it for you. For a list of our all our previous offerings\, check out our LCF Master Plant List. \nAlso\, don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter so you can be sure to get a reminder about the plant sale\, or to know when each year’s new catalog is up. We still accept cash and checks through the online store\, as well as credit cards and PayPal. Please contact us with any questions or requests. Happy planting dreams!
