SUMMARY:Frey Ranch Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Bistro Napa presents the Frey Ranch Dinner.\nThe Freys have been in Nevada for longer than Nevada has been in the Union. The first Frey ranch was established in Genoa\, Nevada in 1854\, a full decade before the land it stood upon became a state. \nThe present Frey ranch was built in the 1860s and purchased in 1944 by Colby’s grandfather\, who saved up the money over three years while living in a dugout with a dirt floor and a tin roof. It sits in Churchill County\, which is home to just over 24\,000 individuals. My drive from Reno that morning was a 70 mile trek through some of the driest land I’d ever seen: the idea that anything could be growing around these parts seemed unbelievable. \nBy Colby’s telling\, it just takes experience and old-fashioned family know-how. \n“We’re in the driest state in the nation\, so not everybody can farm in the desert\,” he says. “What’s unique about our situation is that my forefathers passed on the knowledge of what to do—and more importantly\, what not to do—over the last 150 years.” \n\n\n\nAMUSE BOUCHE\n\n\nSEARED KONA KAMPACHI \nGreen Papaya Slaw\, Tamarind Vinaigrette\, Finger Limes\, Micro Cilantro \nSparkling Collins ~ Frey Ranch Vodka\, Elderflower Liqueur\, Cucumber-Jalapeño Syrup\, Fresh Grapefruit\n\n\nFIRST COURSE\n\n\nHOUSEMADE PINK PEPPERCORN BURRATA \nLocal Greens\, Frisee\, Raspberry Dressing\, Pistachios \nBee’s Knees ~ Frey Ranch Barrel Aged Gin\, Local Honey Syrup\, Mole Bitters\n\n\nSECOND COURSE\n\n\nBOURBON STREET LOBSTER PO’ BOY \nSweet & Spicy Pickles\, Mustard Slaw\, Citrus Aioli\, Toasted Brioche \nFrey Sazerac ~ Frey Ranch Bourbon\, Peychauds Bitters\, Orange Zest\, Filthy Cherry\, Frey Ranch Absinthe Washed Glass\n\n\nTHIRD COURSE\n\n\nTEA-SMOKED PHEASANT BREAST \nAnson Mills Polenta with Oregon Truffles\, Blistered Tomato Salad \nBrown Sugar Sidecar ~ Churchill Vineyards Brandy\, Benedictine\, Spiced Demerara Syrup\, Fresh Lemon Juice\n\n\nFOURTH COURSE\n\n\nSPICED COLORADO LAMB CHOPS \nShishito Peppers\, Apricot Mostarda\, Arugula\, Scallion Potato Croquettes \nRosemary Sour ~ Frey Ranch Rye\, Cynar\, Rosemary Syrup\, Egg White\, Ginger Buckspice Bitters\n\n\n DESSERT\n\n\nBUTTERMILK PANNA COTTA \nCherry Confit\, Almond Tuile

SUMMARY:CANstruction
DESCRIPTION:For the 18th year the American Institute of Architects of Northern Nevada (AIANN) prepares for CANstruction\, presented by Growing Smiles Pediatric Dentistry\, an event to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.  There are nine participating this year\, with five of those being student teams.  Each team designs a structure that they will create out of canned food and which will be judged\, viewed and finally donated to the hungry in the community through the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. \nThis year’s CANstruction event will be held at Meadowood Mall from Wednesday\, May 19 through Sunday May 23\, 2021.  The structures will be built during a twelve-hour period on Wednesday\, May 19.  Teams will gather with their food and build in the mall keeping the structure inside a 10’x10’x10’ area.  Teams will practice teamwork\, planning\, design and giving back to the community all at one event.  Participants and spectators of CANstruction this year are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing when possible to help keep all involved safe. \n“We are excited that even with the challenges throughout the last year\, we are able to come together to build structures that will ultimately serve the many families who need help in our community right now\,” said Fred Graham\, architect and CANstruction committee co-chairman for northern Nevada.  “I always look forward to CANstruction and I am grateful that we will have five student teams joining us this year.” \nThe structures will be judged on Thursday morning by a panel of jurors in 5 categories.  Teams will be competing for the following awards:  Best Original Design\, Structural Ingenuity\, Best Meal\, Best Use of Labels and Most Cans.  This year’s award will be held virtually to limit the number of people that will in one place at a time.  All entries will be submitted to the national level of CANstruction to be judged at the international level against award winners in over 100 other cities worldwide.    The public is invited to vote in the People’s Choice award from 10 a.m. on Wednesday\, May 19 through Monday\, May 24.    Each vote is $1 and all of the money goes to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada where $1 helps to deliver 3 meals to those who need them.  People’s choice voting will take place virtually with a ($10 vote minimum) at fbnn.org.  The structures will be on display\, however\, throughout the weekend at Meadowood Mall for the public to see.

SUMMARY:The Big Groove-in
DESCRIPTION:For 10 years\, we hosted the Father Daughter Dance in the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee community. This year we are going VIRTUAL and including mothers\, sons & the entire family.  \n  \nAfter a year of COVID\, it’s time to dance\, groove\, and have some fun! Please join us on April 24th for a VIRTUAL dance for the whole family. The dance will include a pre-recorded live DJ set by our region’s top DJ\, Tracy McClain. She has put together a special playlist that is fun for kids of all ages. Why a family dance and not a traditional Father Daughter Dance? Because it is still not safe to hold large gatherings\, Sierra Community House wanted to do something virtual that was meaningful for families in our community who may be experiencing extra stress and tension. Dancing makes you feel happy; and some of that pure happiness comes from the bonding dancing promotes. So\, while we are breaking from tradition this year\, we encourage you to come together as a family on this special night and groove! Participate\, dance\, bond. Show your family spirit. Show us your best groove moves! Like and tag us on Instagram and Facebook with your fun dance pics. Let’s show our community that COVID won’t stop us from experiencing joy and happiness! \nThe Big Groove-in is a free event. You must register to receive the party package which includes access to a pre-recorded live DJ set/video\, goody bag with activities\, and 1 raffle entry to win fun prizes donated by local businesses. \nParticipants have the option of purchasing additional raffle tickets. Raffle prizes include dinner at local restaurant Mini Golf\, free ice cream\, Nevada Museum of Art membership\, rafting on the Truckee River\, and more.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Pollinator Gardening Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Pollinators such as bees and butterflies are crucial for helping to produce the fruits and vegetables grown in Nevada. But it’s not just bees and butterflies. Wasps and flies also visit native flowers\, and they provide another important service as pest control for many farm and garden insect pests. To encourage homeowners to support native pollinator populations\, University of Nevada\, Reno Extension is presenting free workshops in Reno and Elko on using native plants to attract pollinators and other beneficial insects.\n\n“Native plants are a beautiful part of our local landscape\, as well as crucial resources for a huge number of native insects\,” Integrated Pest Management Educator Kevin Burls\, with the Extension unit of the University’s College of Agriculture\, Biotechnology & Natural Resources\, said. “Planting native species of plants can beautify your landscape\, reduce your water usage\, increase survival of seedlings\, and provide habitat for flower visitors.”\n\nThe workshop will cover local pollinator diversity and ecology\, review common native plants and how to garden for pollinators\, and end with a short hands-on demonstration on planting native pollinator seedlings. Participants will receive native pollinator plant seeds adapted for their region.\n\n\nThe Reno workshop is 1:30-3 p.m.\, April 17\, at the Truckee Meadows Nature Study Area\, 6800 Pembroke Drive. Register online by April 14 at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScokNj0hrMroumYn0QOTpwlgX-hJcYfnCCmC1qm2AFlcyjZZw/viewform.\n\nThe Elko workshop is 10-11:30 a.m.\, June 12\, at the Extension office in Elko County\, 701 Walnut St. Register online by June 10 at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdYjDNDcATnndNKugQ6_8ZpLsEDwvadaTvn3VEp6aj-EzZQ1Q/viewform.\n\nBoth workshops will be held outdoors regardless of weather\, and all COVID-19 safety requirements will be enforced\, including social distancing and the use of masks. Persons in need of special accommodations or assistance must email Burls at kburls@unr.edu\, or call him at 775-336-0255 at least three days prior to the scheduled class.
