SUMMARY:Genoa Candy Dance
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Candice Vivien\nThe Genoa Candy Dance is a historical event famous for its homemade candy and features more than 300 craft\, art\, and food vendors. Tens of thousands of attendees flock to this fun-filled\, two-day affair annually\, and this year should be no exception.  \nThe candy dance in Genoa had humble beginnings. In 1919\, townswomen held a dinner and fundraiser to pay for the purchase of streetlights to brighten the small town in Nevada. They crafted homemade candy — including various kinds of brittles and taffies\, divinity\, penuche\, and the all-time favorite\, fudge — and passed it out during the dance as an incentive for couples to attend. The first event was such a success that it has continued annually for more than 100 years.  \nThe Genoa Candy Dance still holds true to being a fundraiser for the town to cover general costs such as electricity\, events\, and more. The candy dance would not be possible without the efforts of many volunteers who give their time and energy each year. Genoa Candy Dance organizers still are accepting volunteers. If you’re interested in volunteering\, you can sign up here.  \nAlong with the traditional dinner\, dance\, and candy\, since 1974 the candy dance in Genoa has boasted a large arts and crafts fair. It’s known as one of the greatest craft fairs in Northern Nevada\, drawing artisans and visitors from around the country. Another attraction of the candy dance is Genoa’s quaint charm (the town was Nevada’s first settlement). Genoa is set among steep mountains and mature landscaping and features some buildings crafted in a late-Victorian architectural style. \nAdmission to the arts and crafts fair is free\, but tickets are required to attend the traditional dinner-dance. The dining space is limited so purchase your tickets to the dinner-dance soon. Participants can purchase tickets in person at Genoa’s town office\, online\, or by phone. For an online purchase\, visit here and to make a phone purchase\, call 775-782-8696 between 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Mon. – Fri. \nThe event begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday\, Sept. 25 and runs through 5 p.m. Sunday\, Sept. 25.  The dinner is held 4:30 – 10 p.m. on Saturday\, with dinner service starting at 5:30 p.m. and accompanied by live music. For details about the event\, visit here. \nGenoa is just an hour’s drive from Reno. Special parking and shuttles are available to make the trip easier.  \nDon’t miss out on this historic\, unique\, and pleasure-filled event!

SUMMARY:Lynyrd Skynyrd
DESCRIPTION:About Lynyrd Skynyrd: The legendary rockers are best known for the RIAA Platinum-certified “Sweet Home Alabama” and self-proclaimed signature song\, “Free Bird\,” that Rolling Stone said was “easily the most requested live song in existence.” With everlasting hits such as “Simple Man\,” “Gimme Three Steps\,” “What’s Your Name\,” “Call Me The Breeze\,” “You Got that Right\,” and more\, it is easy to see why Rolling Stone named Lynyrd Skynyrd one of its 100 Greatest Bands of All Time. \nLynyrd Skynyrd\, the band that USA Today called the “whiskey-soaked genre’s most popular and influential crew\,” is ready to return to live music and rock Billy Bob’s for the first time as a band. Original member Gary Rossington will be joined by Johnny Van Zant\, Rickey Medlocke\, Mark “Sparky” Matejka\, Michael Cartellone\, Keith Christopher\, Peter Keys\, Dale Krantz Rossington\, and Carol Chase. \nLynyrdSkynyrd.com \nAbout The Outlaws: For The Outlaws\, it’s always been about the music. For more than 40 years\, the Southern Rock legends celebrated triumphs and endured tragedies to remain one of the most influential and best-loved bands of the genre. Today\, The Outlaws have returned with new music\, new focus\, and an uncompromising new mission: It’s about a band of brothers bound together by history\, harmony\, and the road. It’s about a group that respects its own legacy while refusing to be defined by it’s past. But most of all\, it’s about pride.

SUMMARY:Swan Lake
DESCRIPTION:A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the classic Swan Lake on September 17th and 18th at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the haunting score to this wonderful ballet. Re-staged and re-choreographed by Alexander Van Alstyne\, Swan Lake is the story of Odette who was turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. She tells the handsome Prince Siegfried that the only way the spell can be broken is if a man\, pure in heart\, pledges his love to her. Von Rothbart tries to keep the two apart but in the end they ascend to the heavens above Swan Lake. Professional dancers from throughout the country will star in the lead roles. The large cast includes many talented dancers from four different ballet studios in the Reno area.

SUMMARY:Grupo Fantasma
DESCRIPTION:Grupo Fantasma has been praised as one of the most important independent acts in the Latin genre and has continually defied expectations to create one of the most unique musical voices to come out of the United States in the 21st century. In 2011\, they garnered further acclaim by winning a Grammy (their second such nomination) for their self-produced release El Existential on Nat Geo Music which the Wall Street Journal called\, “Latin music both new and traditional … vibrant fusions that transcend easy classification.” \nThe band’s incendiary live show\, declared by NPR as “seamless whenever and wherever they’re on stage” has brought the band to major festivals and venues internationally including Bonnaroo\, Austin City Limits\, North Sea Jazz Festival Kennedy Center\, London’s O2 Arena\, Montreal Jazz Festival\, as well as two tours to Kuwait and Iraq to entertain US troops and a recent tour in Pakistan and Qatar. Their diverse spectrum of devoted fans speaks to the ensemble’s universal appeal beyond just Latin or world music. \n“Real musicians playing real music.” \nprince

Most days of the festival\, the live music showcase begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 9 p.m. \nNow\, when is the Reno Rib Cookoff? It takes place over Labor Day weekend annually. In 2022\, it begins Wednesday\, Aug. 31 and continues through Monday\, Sept. 5. There is no admission fee\, and the event is open to the public. Free parking is located near the event\, but is extremely limited and fills up quickly. We recommend taking advantage of the free shuttle service. If you’re coming in from out of town to enjoy the Reno Rib Cookoff\, sometimes called the Sparks Rib Cookoff due to its location\, stay in the heart of the action at the Nugget Casino Resort\, located on Victorian Square. The festival spans more than six city blocks in the heart of downtown Sparks on Victorian Avenue between 14th Street and Pyramid Way. \nLeave your non-service animals at home (they are not permitted in Victorian Square). SUMMARY:Classical Tahoe: Sibelius\, Séjourné\, & Rachmaninoff
DESCRIPTION:Sibelius’s Finlandia had its origins in political protest. It was written for the Finnish Press Pension Celebration of 1899\, a thinly veiled rally in support of freedom of the Finnish press\, then largely controlled by tsarist Russia. Sibelius later reworked parts of the music into a Finlandia Hymn which is today regarded as Finland’s unofficial national anthem.\nIt’s not often that a percussion instrument like the marimba is a featured soloist with an orchestra. Praised by the New York Times for his “understated but unmistakable virtuosity”\, Svet Stoyanov will play Séjourné’s Concerto for Marimba which combines the romantic and jazzy sounds of the instrument.\nRachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 is a favorite of many because of its continuous lush\, sweeping\, romantic melodies that will be sure to touch your soul.
